Unsolicited contacts (eg phone call, text message, fax or e-mail) - what can I do to stop them?

Whilst there is nothing illegal regarding the practice of calling consumers for marketing purposes, it is illegal for any company to call in such an unsolicited fashion when the consumer has specifically requested not to be contacted by that company. Failure for the calling company to adhere to such a request is a breach of data privacy legislation and can expose the company to prosecution by the Data Protection Commissioner. The  National Directory database (NDD) is the collation of all landline telephone numbers (excluding ex-directory numbers) and to avail of the “opt-out” option, simply contact the service provider to whom you pay your line rental to and ask to avail of the opt-out option from the NDD. It can take up to 28 days for the process to take.
