What is the charge for using my mobile phone on a ferry?

Mobile network coverage is not available at all times when out at sea. Mobile network coverage will extend for a limited period when you leave shore and will not be available until you near shore again. Therefore, for example, on a ferry between Ireland and the UK, you will be able to use your normal mobile service for a period until the ferry moves out of the mobile network coverage area; When the ferry comes nearer to the UK, mobile network coverage will be available again on a UK network. In this situation standard roaming rates apply.

To enable consumers to be able to make/receive calls for their entire ferry journey some ferries have made a satellite phone service available. This service can be used from your mobile phone but is provided by a different provider than your mobile network operator. When you are on a ferry and outside the mobile network coverage area, you will be made aware via a text to your mobile phone that such a service is available and the text will details prices for using it. This is not a standard roaming service and standard roaming rates do not apply. The prices for these satellite services, although charged through your network provider, are not regulated and are considerably more than the maximum allowed European roaming rates.

If you do not want to use this service and you want to avoid being liable for the prices charged to receive or make calls or to send texts, you should switch your phone off immediately. Operator
