‘112’ for emergency services in the EU

9th February 2012

The Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) has urged the public to be aware that 112 is the phone number to use when contacting the emergency services throughout the EU.

European 112 Day, which promotes the awareness of the pan-European emergency services number 112, will take place on Saturday, 11 February, 2012.
As European citizens are increasingly travelling to other countries, for business or social reasons, there is a need for a single number, identical across the EU, to call in the event of an emergency. When travelling within Europe, the public can call 112 to reach the emergency services. The emergency number is accessible using either a fixed line or a mobile phone.
While surveys have shown that more than 9 out of 10 Europeans are positive towards the creation and existence of this life saving number, still 3 out of 4 are unaware of these three digits that could save their lives when in need of reaching the police, ambulance or fire services.
By being prepared for calling emergency services, people can get the help they need much more quickly - which can make a big difference in an emergency.  Parents should also remember to teach 112 to their children: 112 is 1 mouth, 1 nose and 2 eyes.
